The Woman Before Dawn
1914: As the First World War erupts across Europe, Sylvie Montague defies convention to serve as a surgeon on the Western Front. Haunted by a traumatic incident in the past, she throws herself into her work, determined to save every life she can while honoring a vow she made to herself: to never again operate on someone she loves.
Amid the chaos of war, she forms an unexpected bond with the charismatic and renowned surgeon Alistair McTavish. But on the front line, where every day could be the last, there is little room for love. Fearing the consequences, both deny their growing feelings and try to keep each other at arm's length.
When a government decree threatens to remove the women in her unit from the battlefield, Sylvie returns to England to fight for their future. There, she is forced to confront the life and family she left behind – and the unresolved feelings for her childhood sweetheart, Tristan Grey.
Over the following three years, Sylvie, Alistair and Tristan’s lives become intertwined, as Sylvie has to watch the physical and mental horrors that the war has inflicted upon the men she loves. Then Sylvie’s faced with the decision to break her vow or risk losing another person she cares about. Will the cruel hand of fate steal her chance for true love?
Book Reviews
'This is a stunning debut historical novel. It is well-written, deeply researched, and has unforgettable characters that will stay with me for a long time. And if you're a reader who is bothered by typos or poor grammar, you won't find any in The Woman Before Dawn. The descriptions of the carnage of the Battle of the Somme were soul-shattering and sobering, far removed from noble or heroic. All I could think of was the terrible waste of all of those young men because of a random assassination in Sarajevo. I highly recommend this impressive debut book, but you'll need a big box of tissues.' loved it.
'I did not expect to be sobbing over a war novel this week, but here we are. Sylvie Montague is the kind of heroine you'd follow anywhere, a woman surgeon on the Western Front who never once takes the easy way out. The romance is a gorgeous slow burn, the war feels real without being grim for the sake of it, and that ending absolutely wrecked me (in the best way).
Couldn't put it down. If you love an emotional wartime romance with a heroine worth rooting for, read this one.'
'This is a brilliant story well crafted and with great depth of historical research. The characters are truly authentic and the story is compelling. I was immediately transported to WW1 and it all felt real and the attention to detail is incredible. My granny was at Ypres in Belgium in WW1 and this story allowed me to share what her life then was like. Well worth a read.'
